"Six in The Morning": After driving to work early in the morning, the artist wanted to capture the fog in her windows that was created by her heater that does not work.
About the Artist
Jane Sellarole (she/her) has been interested in film since middle school, which over time blossomed into photography. After being gifted a good quality camera in her Freshman year she became the unofficial photographer for her friends and families. Soon she started to believe the photos she was taking were actually pretty good and therefore decided to pursue photography as a hobby.
"Kaleidoscope" : This photograph was taken on a windy summer day of a dragonfly species the photographer had never seen before and as of yet has not seen since. The name was inspired by the abundance of color in the photo which heavily inspired the photographer.
"Plentiful" : Color is something particularly inspiring this photographer, and yellow and green are one of her favorite pairs. These bold flowers demanded her immediate attention and she wants them to demand yours too. The bright yellow and crisp green highlight the textures as plentiful in this photograph as the color, like the coarse center on the flowers and the thin, indented petals.
"City Lights" : This piece was originally made with the concept of confusion in mind, but after failed attempts was reworked to capture a feeling of wonder. It reminds the artist of driving through a city late at night when circles and streaks of light catch their eye.
"Searching" : This photograph was taken in the late summer in the photographer's garden. She noticed the bee wandering from flower to flower and wanted to capture a sense of the bee's adventure and how differently it must experience the world in comparison with humans.
"Upside" : This photograph depicts two varying perspectives between a praying mantis and the photographer. To each creature, the other is upside down. The photographer also feels this image has an upside emotionally with the abundance of bright greens and yellows and an almost cheerful expression on the praying mantis.
"Looking In" : This photograph captures the bright greens, rays of light, and texture in the pond at the house the photographer grew up in. She enjoys taking a closer look at things to bring new perspectives and does so in this photo, even coming close to the ground to get the right angle.
"The Perfectionist" : This self-portrait was inspired by the artist's struggle with perfectionism and her attempts to rebel against it. The artist also experimented with perfectionism in the artistic techniques used to create the piece, using bolder colors and line techniques she hasn't used before.
"Iridescent" : This photograph was taken steps outside of the photographer's door but with many moments of patience. Hawk moths like the one in this photograph move incredibly quickly and require a lot of time to snap a picture with the right composition and focus before they leave.
"Takeoff" : Focusing on the subject in this photograph required the photographer to sit on the ground and wait for a small damselfly to approach her long enough for a good photo. While this particular insect looks like it is about to take off in flight, it stayed just long enough for the photographer to capture it forever digitally.
"Grand 12" : This photograph was taken at the Grand Canyon and inspired by the wonder of seeing the massive landscape.
"Details" : The intricate details on the butterfly wings inspired the composition of this photograph. The photographer wanted to surround the tiny, beautiful bug with tiny, beautiful flowers to bring attention to the texture and detail you can find in nature when you look close enough.
"Satisfied" : Initially, this photograph was inspired by the blue sky so blank it almost looks like a sheet of paper. However, upon closer inspection, the flower became the star of the composition. It looks droopy and sad, but peaceful. Flowers beneath it are losing their petals while others are only just blooming. To the photographer, the photograph looks like the central sunflower's reflection on life, and it appears satisfied and at peace.
"Disconnected" : This piece was made to represent the feeling where your mind and body don't connect. The artist has anxiety and often finds herself in a panic-like state without specific anxious thoughts to accompany the feelings. Her mind is calm, but her body is not. This piece plays with that idea in a clearly more dramatized way and the head in the photograph makes it somewhat of a self portrait.
"Momentum" : The photographer stumbled upon a praying mantis wandering in the flowers and crouched down to snap a picture at the perfect mid-step moment.
"Grand 15" : This photograph was taken at the Grand Canyon and inspired by the wonder of seeing the massive landscape.
About the Artist
Alyssa Tregembo (she/her) is a photographer, artist, and current Folsom Lake College student. She has been taking art classes throughout all levels of schooling and has practiced photography since her early years of high school. Alyssa is inspired by color, nature and its overlooked aspects and creatures, as well as concepts of time, self, and emotion. "We Were Explorers" : This piece was inspired by the most recent Mars rover, Perseverance, and how lonely they must feel out in space. This drawing represents how unexplored the universe feels to the artist.
"Never Alone" : The entire piece represents the dread of growing up. The two characters in the middle are the past and the future, comforting each other. While the eyes and reaching hands are uncertainty.
"Red Scare" : This piece was made to evoke a sense of dread and anxiety. It originated from a place of loss and anger.
"Decommissioned" : This piece was made in attempt to show the relationship of the artist and their body. It's supposed to show how robotic it felt to get ready and keep up appearances everyday.
"Moonlight" : This picture shows the silhouette of two characters in love under the moon. The anonymity of the characters leaves room for interpretation, along with the simplicity of the background.
About the Artist
Dean Balila (she/her) has always been interested in art as a hobby and as a coping mechanism. Her art is heavily inspired by anime/manga, and the different relationships in her life. She’s a second-year student at Folsom Lake College and plans to transfer to finish her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Outside of art, she enjoys crocheting, watching Studio Ghibli movies, or scrolling social media to find inspiration for more art. She focuses on digital art because of how accessible it is but hopes to branch into acrylic and oil painting in the coming future. You can find more of her art on her Instagram; @dean.dip.
“Oh, What Do I Do?” : A self portrait of Jillian Sellarole as their life filled with conflicting feelings regarding their relationship. Through exaggerated features, they captured the feelings of doubt and tears streaming down their face.
“Targeted Together” : When Roe vs. Wade was overturned in June of 2022, social media and news outlets exploded with coverage of the topic. Through anger, sadness, and anxiety for the future of those who need or want abortions, “Targeted Together” was born. A quick sketch with no plan other than passion explored the page that day.
“Upside-down, Flipped, Backwards, and Every Synonym Above” : Inspired by Egon Schiele, exaggerated bone structure visible through the subjects ankles, neck, and arms is what makes poses like these so dynamic. Admittedly, and evidently, no reference was used, but that makes it all the more unique.
“The Feminine Physique” : As any artist knows, it is easy to draw what you’re familiar with. While this piece is not a self portrait, it is a reflection of the body Sellarole knows very well. Representation is important in art, and everywhere, so capturing curves and rolls in a positive and beautiful light is crucial today.
“Freckles!” : Struggling with color, using grayscale was a fitting way to get down shapes and shadows. This woman, smiley and dotted with freckles, was the perfect subject to get the gray and happy point across.
“Would this look good as a tattoo?” : As stated in the title, Sellarole was debating on being a tattoo artist as a viable career. So naturally, trying out a few drawings and wondering if it would work as a tattoo was in order…
About the Artist
Jillian Sellarole (they/them) started drawing in middle school, developing their style as time went on. Feeling comfortable enough to express their gender identity through art for many to see, they joined AP Art in their senior year of high school and centered their portfolio around it. Hoping to make a career out of art, they are currently majoring in Studio Arts at Folsom Lake College.
"Exposure Therapy" : Last year the photographer took the Skyline Trail up Mount Rainier, Washington. When they finally reached the top and looked out at the horizon – he experienced an immaculate moment of relief. They took a deep breath and said, "Gee golly, I should take a picture". And so they did.
About the Artist
Bradley Rist (he/they) is an English major transferring from Folsom Lake College to California State University of Sacramento. He has an interest in teaching literature at the community college level, but they maintain an undying passion for film, music, and all other variations of storytelling and character dissection as well. Currently, they work as a tutor in FLC's Reading and Writing Center and as an employee at Regal Cinemas in his hometown of El Dorado Hills. In his spare time, you will find them watching Studio Ghibli movies and collecting inspiration to write their own stories or characters for future projects or Dungeons and Dragons campaigns. He looks back fondly on the fun and learned experiences of working within The Parlay's editorial staff and sends best wishes to the future of Folsom Lake's arts magazine.
"Spirit" : When the photographer took this photo she was in Florida taking a tour of a marsh. Then she saw this bird and immediately reached for her camera. She has always seen birds as a creature with such freedom that she constantly takes the time to photograph them when given the chance.
"Kuh" : This past summer the photographer had the opportunity to travel to Europe. One of the countries that she visited on this trip was Switzerland. Not only did she get the chance to go to Switzerland, she also had the opportunity to travel up into the Alps which was the setting of her photo. The photographer named this piece Kuh because she was in the German-speaking part of Switzerland and the word cow translated into German is Kuh.
About the Artist
Kiva Sharp grew up in the Folsom area. She is a student with a strong interest in feminism and human rights. Outside of her photography hobby, Kiva is an avid reader and writer. She is inspired by her love of nature and animals.
"The Deicide of Depression" : This piece reimagines depression as a cosmic threat to our solar system in order to dispel the stigma of depression as an illness amongst individuals who are “dramatic” or lack “real problems.” Mental illness is a foul force that may root within individuals, but its impact can be felt deeply across individuals, groups, and even generations with a destructive tenacity that is more devastating than we perceive or desire to admit. However, beside this powerful being with the very sun cradled in its hands, we see hope: we see an angel piercing its black maw with a golden lance. The Angel’s face is a miniature mirror that has been glued to the canvas, reminding us that we have power over this beast. Depression thrives in stagnancy, in the spaces where it is unfettered, but if we each take an active stance in challenging it, on whatever level it affects us, we make it clear that this realm is not a space where it will thrive.
About the Artist
Kiefer Sommerfield, going by the alias, Zix Elixel, loves painting darker subjects, and those that know him closely are familiar with his propensity for painting demons. His thematic focus is the coexistence of opposites, especially of growth through pain. He is now taking 3-dimensional art classes at Los Rios Community College, and he hopes these classes will take him in new directions of artistry. Outside of art, Kiefer enjoys coffee or boba runs at any time of day, plays video games, eats yummy food rapidly, listens to music non-stop, and craves sunlight. He currently works at Kingswood Elementary school as an after-school teacher, where he attempts to bring art (albeit much more child-friendly) to the students and help them understand their true potential as human beings. "Tea Time" : This photograph features the rolling hills of Europe’s primary tea plantation. The Gorreana Tea Plantation is located in São Miguel, Portugal, operating since 1883. The photographer thought the lush nature of the fields serves as a reminder of the beautiful ecosystems this planet has to offer.
About the Artist
Ethaniel Haboush (he/him) is a first-year student at Folsom Lake who is currently studying political science. He is not a regular photographer but when traveling, he enjoys capturing memorable moments. In addition to traveling, he really enjoys hiking and discovering new music.
"Steps Already Taken" : In this piece the artist wanted to explore her thoughts on life. Oftentimes she has an itching feeling that she's lived other lives. She wonders if her current and past lives paths are intertwining.
About the Artist
Juliet Roman is 21 years old and has been practicing art for many years. Though she prefers physical media such as acrylic and charcoal, recently she’s been experimenting with digital media. She hopes to continue trying new media and push her own boundaries as an artist.

About the Artist
Aaron Runkle is a freshman at Folsom Lake College and he currently majors in Environmental Systems: Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity. He volunteers at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary and as a docent at the Sacramento Zoo to help educate others about preserving biodiversity and ending the Anthropocene extinction event. Aaron uses photography as a way to help others reflect on species already lost and those currently at risk of extinction. You can find more of his work at @aarons_photography_spam on Instagram.
"The Close" : This photo was shot on a Pentax K1000 with Portra 400 35mm film. This was the first time Kylie ever photographed a concert and shot on film. This particular photo sparked her passion to pursue film photography more seriously. In the photo you'll see Jayden Seeley, lead singer for the now retired With Confidence band, singing an acoustic solo in Berkley, CA.

About the Artist
Kylie Quezada is a 22-year-old free-spirited, free-lance photographer based out of Northern California. The things she loves most are her pups & traveling all over with her two cameras. Kylie has been a photographer for the past seven years and is constantly looking for ways to grow her skills within the artform all while serving active duty in the military. Once she separates in 2024, she plans to continue to grow her photography business further.
"Relaxation" : This piece was created digitally and displays a young woman relaxing with only her inner thoughts to keep her company. All the while cool lighting envelopes her body.
About the Artist
Faizan Dossa grew up and resides in Toronto, Canada. His enjoyment for doodling at a young age grew into a love for illustrating. He is currently an art student at Sheridan College with dreams of becoming a full time illustrator and to create his own webcomic. Besides his love for the arts, he is also an avid writer. A majority of his artistic motivation comes from his friends in college.
"Prom" : The textile of her senior prom dress was the inspiration behind this painting. She completed this piece in the midst of covid and found the colors of the pattern to be both distracting and harmonious. This coupled with the twisting folds of the fabric made for a beautifully symbolic composition.
"Bollywood" : The subject of the painting is a mesh coin skirt that was used by her high school dance department for performances and class projects. The story behind this piece has many layers, but if she was to summarize it to the best of her ability, its purpose would be to pay homage to the ups and downs of life as an artist.
About the Artist
Chloe Sellarole (she/her) is an artist from the Rocklin area. She is currently a student studying at Sierra College and aspires to become an art teacher. Outside of art, Chloe expresses artistry as a dancer of almost 19 years, practicing as a studio teacher, coach, and national instructor. Chloe is inspired by human nature, movement, and color, and all three are especially prevalent in her work.

Jo Eisenberg grew up in the Sacramento area. She is a super senior who is in her last semester as a community college student and will transfer to a 4 year in the fall. She is an aspiring writer as well as amatuer photographer with a passion for street photography, human interest, and Opeds. Outside of her Journalistic aspirations, Jo is avidly involved in the local Jewish community and hopes to start her own Podcast soon spotlighting strong women throughout history.
"How Many More" : It was never Robert Kennedy’s intent to create this image. It is more the culmination of several failed compositions that came before it. After all the pieces came together, he and others that saw it felt its impact immediately. He believes that a majority of us feel, to some degree, that mass shootings are now just a part of life that we are powerless to change. It is my hope that this photograph serves as a reminder that these mass killings are happening to our children with an alarming frequency.
About the Artist
Born in Australia and raised in the greater Sacramento area, Robert Kennedy developed an appreciation for the arts from an early age. It wasn’t until later in life that he began to create art of his own. He eventually settled on photography as his preferred artistic medium. Robert is also passionate about music and performing with other local musicians. When he is able, he enjoys road trips to explore new locales and the natural world.
"Avoidance" : An unglazed ceramic piece based on the classic portrait-bust sculptures but with a twist of imagery. Rather than an unworldly monster making its home on the subject, this piece represents one’s own fears creeping up on them. No matter how much you ignore the problem or pretend it isn’t there, the more you avoid it, the more its existence eats at you. It feels like a parasite that only grows and grows the more you let it rest, yet somehow it's almost easier to do nothing about it.

"Self-fulfilling Prophecy" : A ceramic piece inspired by an original character. The sculpture is of a hurt fox in a pool of its own blood, a more representational approach to showcase this character’s emotions without showing his human form. He is cunning by nature, but due to past experiences, he wallows in uncertainty. Rather than face the possibilities of the future, he soaks himself in mind-numbing memories filled with pain and anguish to overwhelm himself. It leaves a bittersweet stillness, much like death.
About the Artist
Lorea Beobide-Cardinal is a Canadian citizen attending Sheridan College for the Honors Bachelor of Animation. She strives to make stories in her works pertaining to her own creations, such as characters, to bring life to fun ideas. Lorea is passionate about a myriad of things, which gives her inspiration and drive to make something as interesting as the media she consumes.
